At this year’s MIPCOM, we launched the 2024 edition of Tracking the Scripted Giants: The Top 100 Travelling Scripted Formats. Presented to a full crowd at the Producers Hub in Cannes, the digital report was also shared with all K7 subscribers.
Taking a deep dive into the scripted format market, insights revealed in the report include British domestic thrillers Doctor Foster (BBC Studios) and Liar (All3Media International) being crowned the joint most adapted scripted formats of the decade so far. Launching a massive nine new international versions each since the beginning of 2020, it’s testament to how in demand adaptable formats are becoming in the scripted space.
Both formats’ global journeys have been powered by the relatable, human stories at their core. First launched on BBC1 in 2015, Doctor Foster follows a woman who uncovers a series of disturbing truths after beginning to suspect her husband of having an extramarital affair. The latest adaptations of the format have launched in Japan, Germany, Slovakia, the Middle East and Thailand. Debuting on ITV in 2017 meanwhile, Liar sees a schoolteacher accuse a renowned surgeon of rape after a blind date. Its latest versions have come in Slovakia, Malaysia and Georgia.
Other top shows highlighted include French hits High Intellectual Potential and Call My Agent!, Italy’s Doc, Korea’s Signal, and UK comedy Ghosts – demonstrating the expanding global reach of adaptable formats.
